A commuting incentive program to get you moving!
All of us need to get to work, but few of us have considered combining daily exercise with our commute. Workout to Work is an incentive program designed to help you stay healthy by walking or bicycling to work or transit.
Workout to Work is designed for the person who lives within a five to ten mile radius of their workplace or a transit/bus station. Whether you have been walking for years, or haven't gotten on a bike since you were twelve, we have the tools and incentives to get you on your way.
When you join Workout to Work, you will receive materials to help you track your healthy commuting achievements. Each month that you track your miles, you are eligible for great prizes! There is no cost to participate just the energy needed to get you on your way.
Besides the great incentives provided to you through this program, there are many other benefits to walking or bicycling to work.
With the stress of trying to "do it all" in an already hectic day many of us forgo exercise. The US Centers for Disease Control recently determined that the most effective exercise is "moderate in intensity, individualized, and incorporated into our daily activity". What better way to get in shape, feel better and lose weight than to commute under your own power? By incorporating regular moderate exercise into your daily commute you reduce your risk of many diseases and get to work less stressed.
Congestion has become a daily reality of commuting. Whether you are driving alone stuck in traffic, or a transit rider hoping for a seat, you are at the mercy of the road and rail system. Commuters who choose to walk, or bike to work leave on their own schedule, don't have to deal with parking or traffic hassles and arrive at the front door of their office. Many commuters find they save time too!
While you will be healthier in body and mind, you will also find your wallet is healthier too. The average American spends close to 15% of their income on transportation, more than food! Commuting by your own power saves you parking fees, fuel costs, auto maintenance, and transit fares. There are very little costs involved in biking, or walking to work- especially since some of your equipment needs are provided through the Workout to Work program.
Cars, trucks and buses are the number one source of air pollution in the U.S.; they also contribute to noise and water pollution. Short car trips, those that are less than three miles, emit three times more pollution since the start-up of the vehicle contains the most toxins. By eliminating just one vehicle round trip you can prevent 15 pounds of pollution per day. Imagine what doing that three times a week could do.
The goal of Workout to Work is to get moving- whether you choose to walk, bicycle, rollerblade, or jog is up to you. Here are a few things to consider when making the choice.
Walking is suitable exercise for all ages and fitness levels. Bicycling and rollerblading, are great ways to commute but require some level of skill. It is recommended that you take an Effective Cycling class, or practice riding your route during off peak times to ensure your comfort level.
Determining the best route and the best way to get there will depend on the amount of time you wish to spend and the distance you need to cover. The average walking speed is about three miles per hour, therefore anything less than three miles would be consider a reasonable walking distance. Cyclist travel at about three times the speed of walkers and therefore could easily cover 10 miles in an hour. For those who live more than 10 miles from their place of work, why not consider walking, or biking to the nearest transit station?
Walking requires the least amount of "gear", a simple pair of good walking shoes will get you on your way. Bicyclist should have a bike in good working condition, a helmet, reflective materials and lighting for night riding. It is also wise to check out the facilities at your workplace before you begin your commute to ensure that you have a safe place to lock your bike, and a place to change if needed.
