Prudential Walk

Back by Popular Demand—we are continuing our walking series into the fall and this time we’ll be featuring different themes/neighborhoods.

 

A FREE Lunchtime Series of Guided Walks

 

Join the ABC TMA as we explore the fascinating land-making history of Boston. Walks are FREE and open to ABC TMA member companies and their tenants/ employees. Please notice the dates carefully as some walks are on a Weds, Thurs, or Friday in the months of September and October.

 

Theme walks include:

SEP 21: Back Bay Fens/Emerald Necklace

OCT 14: Planning/Architecture Tour of Copley, Prudential, and Tent City

OCT 20: Nightlife at Mid-Century

Oct 27: The Dark Side of Boston

 

All walks depart promptly at 12:00 Noon and last approximately 60 minutes

To register for the walk, fill out the form below. Space is limited to 40 participants per walk. Contact the TMA should your plans change and you aren't able to attend.

Black Heritage Trail

Explore the history of Boston's 19th century African American community located predominantly in the Beacon Hill area and learn about what life was like for a free African American prior to the Civil War. Highlights include: The African-American Meeting House, the oldest black church building in the US and the Abiel Smith School, the first public school for black children. The tour will be led by a National Park Ranger.

 

Meeting location: Robert Gould Shaw Memorial on Beacon Street, across from the Massachusetts State House.

Wednesday, September 21st

Back Bay Fens/Emerald Necklace Tour

Beginning and ending at the new Emerald Necklace Visitor Center, a former gatehouse designed by renowned architect H.H. Richardson, the tour meanders through the Back Bay Fens. Participants will learn about the life and vision of Olmsted and the history of the park, visit the Kelleher Rose Garden, an idyllic spot with more than 1,500 roses, and stroll through the oldest World War II Victory Gardens in America. The tour will be led the Emerald Necklace Conservancy.

Architectural/Planning Tour of Copley Square, Prudential, and Tent City

Led by Christine Cousineau, AICP architect and planner. Christine works as a senior campus planner at Harvard University and instructor at Tufts UEP, where she teaches Urban Planning and Design and Green Urban Design and Place-Making. This tour will take us through Copley Square, Tent City, and the Prudential noting urban history and development from the 19th century to the 1980's.

Boston Nightlife at Mid-Century

Led by Richard Vacco, author of, "Making the Scene: the People and Places of Boston Jazz. Where did Bostonians go for entertainment on a Saturday night in 1944, or 1950, or 1956? They went downtown, to enjoy big bands on Washington Street, Broadway tryouts in the Theatre District, lively jazz clubs on Tremont Street, and nightclub floor shows in Bay Village. Join us as we retrace the footsteps of Boston at play in the '40s and '50s.

The Dark Side of Boston

This tour conducted by the Boston By Foot company, highlights the misery, misfortune, malevolence, and murder in Boston based on true historical events. Winding among the labyrinth of small streets and alleys of the North End, participants will hear about the dark and disturbing stories not told to tourists. Highlights include: the smallpox and influenza outbreaks, the Molasses Flood, and the infamous Brink’s robbery.

Meeting location: Next to Mother Anna's Restaurant, at the corner of Hanover and Cross Streets, across from the Greenway.
