The Facts:
- More than 3 million people commute each day in Massachusetts, and more than 73 percent of them drive to work alone. (Census 2000 Supplementary Survey)
- The average Massachusetts worker spent 27 minutes traveling to work each way. This was the 9th longest commute time in the nation (MassInc)
- The average Boston household spends nearly $6,000 annually on transportation—15 percent of its income— and spends more on transportation than it does on food.(Surface Transportation Policy Project)
- The amount of wasted fuel lost to engines idling in traffic jams now totals 2.3 billion gallons per year. (Texas Transportation Institute, 2005 Urban Mobility Report) At $2.60 per gallon, this represents almost $6 billion dollars that commuters could have spent on housing, health care, education, or other discretionary items.
Be a Part of the Future:
- Use a commute option such as public transit, carpool, vanpool, or telecommute at least one day per week.
- Bike or walk to public transit.
- Take part in one of the ABC TMAs programs that encourage you to make the switch from driving alone to using one of the many commute options available to you in Boston.
- Purchase your MBTA transit pass through work and save hundreds of dollars in tax savings.
