ABC TMA is an independent, consensus oriented, nonprofit organization made up of employers, retailers, business owners, public sector representatives and others working together to address employee transportation issues and improve air quality and traffic in the downtown and Back Bay areas of Boston.
The ABC TMA was established in 1996, by the Artery Business Committee in partnership with the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) project and the City of Boston in order to address employer concerns about getting employees, clients, and visitors into Boston during the peak construction of the CA/T (the Big Dig).
The ABC TMA includes employers who represent a variety of industries including finance, medicine, property management, telecommunications, printing, insurance and law. The TMA currently services over 65,000 employees and covers over 32.5 million square feet of office development in downtown Boston and the Back Bay.
To encourage the use of alternatives the ABC TMA provides incentives and programs that encourage employees to take transit, carpool, vanpool, bike and walk into work. By doing this, the ABC TMA is able to lower the cost of these commute modes and make them fun and rewarding to use.
The benefits affect us all, with less traffic and cleaner air.
ABC, once known as the Artery Business Committee, was formed in 1989 in recognition of a mutual interest among major Boston area businesses to focus corporate support and help manage the ongoing impact of the Central Artery/Tunnel (CA/T) Project or the “Big Dig” - the largest and most technically challenging infrastructure project ever undertaken in the United States. The ABC officially transitioned to A Better City in May 2006, and will soon launch a new Web site at www.abettercity.org.
Over the past 17 years, ABC worked with private and public partners to ensure that the City of Boston remained open for business during construction of the CA/T Project, while also solving problems and building consensus on design, funding and operational issues critical to its success. The ABC Board of Directors is comprised of leaders from almost 90 business and institutions in Greater Boston.
As the CA/T Project nears completion, A Better City will continue its efforts on the CA/T project and the new Rose Kennedy Greenway while expanding our scope of work to include other infrastructure investments. ABC will provide the business and institutional leadership essential for ensuring Boston 's future competitive economic advantage, and will work to achieve tangible results on transportation, land development, and public realm infrastructure investments we believe important to our future economy and quality of life. Sample future priorities include Silver Line Phase III, the Urban Ring, and the Crossroads Initiative.
